Martha and George Washington       Mount Vernon Virginia

Mount Vernon Mansion

Mount Vernon, home to George and Martha Washington
Doll house size replica of the Mount Vernon Mansion

Hi, this is the third page of our photos and comments for Mount Vernon. For our first Mount Vernon page click here.

Mount Vernon is located on the Potomac River in Virginia, about 8 miles below the southern edge of the Washington DC beltway.

Mount Vernon was the beloved home of George and Martha Washington from the time of their marriage in 1759. Evidence collected by archaeologists is being used to reconstruct the First President's estate, mansion, gardens, and Mount Vernon's closeby gristmill and distillery.

We have visited the Mount Vernon estate and Mount Vernon gardens several times to provide photos and comments below regarding location, parking, picnic areas, child play areas, nearby eateries, shopping, and other nearby attractions.

About this third page of Mount Vernon photos and comments .... it is all about the delightful doll house size replica of Mount Vernon that is located on the Mount Vernon estate in the Ford Orientation Center.

Lots of stuff is at the Ford Orientation Center: information desk, huge wall mural, auditorium featuring a Mount Vernon information film, click here to check out our comments and pictures of Ford Orientation Center and other Mount Vernon stuff.

The doll house size replica of Mount Vernon is very helpful for seeing parts of the house not seen in the tour. It is amazing the attention to detail that is presented in this lovely exhibit. Like tiny leather fire buckets set off in a closet (not visited in the tour) near the main door at the rear of the house. Up on the third floor, storage rooms are revealed as the roof lifts up and down every few minutes to provide peeks.

Photos are not allowed inside the real mansion, so this doll house is a second best way to snap photos of the various rooms. Visit our full size (raw digital images) photos at click here to view the delightful details of each room.

For comparison, below leftmost photo is the rear view of the real mansion and next to it is the doll house size replica.

Front View of Mansion

The front central rooms are two bedrooms to the left of the entry hallway and on the right side another bedroom above the music room.

Below photo are the two left bedrooms and the hallway.

Note in central hallway the narrow staircase from the second to the third floor. Interesting that Martha chose to spend most of her time in a third floor bedroom after George Washington died.

I noticed the bed lines were prints when I had thought they would had needle point designs. So I asked and learned that the wealthy households of the 18th century customed ordered printed bed linens from India. A block print was handstamped on the fabric one color at a time to produce the richly printed designs.

Private Wing

Visitors often stayed for months at Mount Vernon. To escape them, Martha and George Washington established one wing of the house to be near off limits unless the visitor was invited into the rooms.
The first floor of this wing held George's study where his clothing was also kept and upstairs they shared a bedroom with a 6 foot length bed (for the tall George Washington).
