Mount Vernon, home to George and Martha Washington
|
Mount Vernon is located on the Potomac River in Virginia, about 8 miles below the southern edge of the Washington DC beltway.
Mount Vernon was the beloved home of George and Martha Washington from the time of their marriage in 1759. Evidence collected by archaeologists is being used to reconstruct the First President's estate, mansion, gardens, and Mount Vernon's closeby gristmill and distillery.
We have visited the Mount Vernon estate and Mount Vernon gardens several times to provide photos and comments below regarding location, parking, picnic areas, child play areas, nearby eateries, shopping, and other nearby attractions.

Mount Vernon is on the Potomac River in Virginia, about 8 miles below the southern edge of the
Washington DC beltway and is located on the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway (Route 400).
marks the location of Mount Vernon.
From Alexandria, Virginia (lower edge of DC beltway) Route 400 heads south providing
scenic views of the Potomac River until you reach Mount Vernon.
Another way to Mount Vernon is from Richmond Highway (Route 1) to Mount Vernon Memorial Highway (Route 235). Route 235
intersects twice with Route 1. Either way you take Route 235 from Route 1, Route 235 intersects with the south end of Route 400. Route 400 then travels through lovely treed communities of homes until you reach Mount Vernon.
indicates the
southern most intersection of Route 1 and Route 235 (this is outside the northern boundary of Fort Belvoir)
indicates
the north intersection of Route 1 and Route 235.
If you have need a hospital is located a bit further north (of the Route 235 and Route 1 intersection).
The Mount Vernon Hosptial is off of Route 1, towards the Potomac River (Sherwood Hall Lane then Parkers Lane).
|
Gas stations and fast food eateries are located close to both intersections where Route 235 meets Route 1. Note once you leave Route 1
(Richmond Highway) and start driving Route 235 (Mount Vernon Memorial Highway) towards Mount Vernon you travel through home communities with
no large commercial ventures like gas stations and such. A food court and bathrooms are available within the gift shop building
at Mount Vernon and are wheelchair and stroller
accessible. The Mount Vernon Inn offers colonial charm and a menu of early-American cuisine. Check with the Inn to determine which entrance to
use for wheelchairs and strollers.

the north intersection of Route 1 and Route 235. At this traffic light there is a wooded area with a driveway (other side of traffic light
is gas station and small food mart adjoining Route 235). This wooded driveway belongs to the National Trust Historic Preservation Site of the 17th
century Woodlawn Plantation and the Pope Leighey house built by Frank Lloyd Wright.

As the acreage of Woodlawn Plantation once belonged to George Washington, so did the gristmill and distillery
located along the southern part of Route 235. Click here to view our

For beauty and peaceful moments, head further south along Route 1, go
past Fort Belvoir to the traffic light at Gunston Road. Make a left (towards Potomac River area)
( ) onto Gunston Road.
Both Mason Neck State Park and Wildlife Refuge and the Pohick Bay Regional Park are a few miles down Gunston Road. Wooded picnic areas,
