George and Martha Washington's Gristmill and Distillery
|

|
The gristmill and distillery for Mount Vernon is located a few miles from the Mount Vernon estate
along the southern part of Route 235.
The Mount Vernon estate , home to Martha and George Washington, is located on the Potomac River in Virginia, about 8 miles below the southern edge of the
Washington DC beltway.
Originally built in the 18th century, and now a current restoration project, the Mount Vernon gristmill and distillery offers
visitors the experience to tour an authentically restored water-powered 18th-century mill. Costumed millers demonstrate its workings;
likewise for the distillery. Evidence collected by archaeologists is being used to reconstruct the distillery building.

Admission tickets for touring the gristmill and the distillery can be purchased at the gift shop or at Mount Vernon. Walking about the
grounds of the gristmill and distillery is free.

There are steps up and into the gift shop plus it was tight moving about the gift shop.

Inside the gristmill building it was extremely loud when the mill's grinding wheels were being demonstrated.
The gristmill is two floors; the
tour took interior wood plank steps down to the lower floor.
Both floors could be reached by their own ground level exterior doorways though the brick pathway to the lower level is downhill
from the parking lot.

Exiting the lower level of the gristmill we took a break outside, enjoying sitting at the picnic tables while watching several people fishing in the lazily moving nearby stream.

A well-informed tour guide explained the history of and restoration of the Mount Vernon Distillery.
We had first arrived at the gristmill and distillery mid-morning. There were several large tour buses there so we decided to go back onto
Route 1 and find an inviting eatery for a munch break for lunch. When we got back, the tour buses had moved on to Mount Vernon,
and we nearly had
the tour of the gristmill and distillery to ourselves, which was quite nice.
